Anthony Berteaux is an award-winning writer with words published in the Washington Post, HuffPost, Tower Magazine, Tablet Magazine, the Jewish Daily Forward and the San Diego Union-Tribune. He grew up in Tokyo, Japan and came to the United States in 2011. He is currently the news editor at GIPHY. He was the 2017 recipient of the Zahn Spirit of Innovation Award.
Anthony was born in the United States, but he grew up in Tokyo, Japan. Since Anthony came to the United States from Tokyo in 2011, he has translated his bewilderment and awe of American culture, politics and society into his written work. From his freshman year in college, Anthony's columns in the Daily Aztec, Huffington Post and Tower Magazine have reached a national and international audience. He got his start in 2014, when one of his first columns for the paper about a sexist student government campaign video went viral, being featured in major news outlets such as the Huffington Post and the Daily Mail.
Since then, his written work has been featured and responded to in the New York Post, CNN International, New York Daily News, BBC World Radio, the Washington Post, Mozaic Magazine, USA Today, the Washington Times and Real Time with Bill Maher. In 2016, Anthony spoke on a segment for CNN International, discussing a controversial Chris Rock joke at the Oscars. In 2017, he was invited on BBC World Service’s radio segment, “My Perfect Country,” to talk about gun control and policy in Japan and the United States.
When he was a student, Anthony was a Campus Editor at Large for the Huffington Post and a radio host for KCR College Radio where he ran a weekly talk show. During the week, he interned at the Anti-Defamation League of San Diego as a social media editor and with the San Diego Union-Tribune's Opinion and Editorial team as a writer. Anthony also previously worked for San Diego State’s campus newspaper, the Daily Aztec, as an assistant opinion editor and senior staff writer. Anthony was also a 2015 Tower Tomorrow Fellow for The Tower in Washington DC, where he co-founded his own monthly magazine, ProgressME Magazine.
Anthony is also active as a public speaker. In 2015, he was a panelist at the Anti-Defamation League's Middle East Conference in New York City and a speaker at Chai's Jewish Expression and Dialogue Talks (JED Talks) in San Diego. In 2016, Anthony was a panelist at the Anti-Defamation League's first Never Is Now conference on anti-Semitism. In 2017, at JED Talks, Anthony spoke on the intersection of memes and contemporary political discourse on social media. He also was a speaker at the SDSU's 8th Annual Leadership Summit, leading a session on "Ramen Nation: Using Social Media to Build and Lead Online Communities."
Anthony hopes to use his multiple identities as a Japanese and American national to cover issues of importance for both audiences.
